How does the Garmin work:

The Global Positioning System ( GPS ) is a satellite-based radio navigation system. It provides Geo location i.e, estimation of the real-world geographic location of an object, and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on the earth where there is an unobstructed lineage of three-four GPS sites.

Initially, GPS was used by the American Government for army purposes to protect its people from any kind of disaster but later it was used by civilians commonly around the globe.

What is Topography?

Topography deals with the shape and character of the Earth’s surface. The first artifacts to record these observations were the maps.

What are Topo maps?

Topo maps are a type of map characterized by large-scale detail and quantitative representation of reliefs by connecting points of equal elevation. If you go by the traditional definition, a topographic map is required to show both natural and artificial features.

A Topographic survey is based on various specifications:

  • Range of cartographic symbols employed.
  • A standard geodetic framework to give a properly defined map projection.
  • A coordinated system.
  • Ellipsoid and geodetic datum.

Note: A national grid referencing system is adopted for official topographic maps.

A detailed depiction is also provided by these maps for ground relief i.e, land forms and terrain, drainage i.e, lakes and rivers, forest cover, administrative areas, populated areas, transportation routes and facilities i.e, roads and railways, and other man-made features.

Map sources:

When you are working with an outdoor handheld using a serial port connection to a computer, you can use map sources. You can use newer handhelds that use a USB connection as a base camp.

Note: You can download Map sources for free from the Garmin website’s Map source page. This software is available for Windows only.

Map Source cannot be installed on your computer without a previous version of maps already on the computer.
